Onset refers to the first letter of any word and rime refers to the string of letters that follows. For example, in the word mat, "m" is the onset and "at" is the rime. Teaching students this idea will help them be able to become familiar with words and increase their vocabulary. Knowing this skill allows students to be able to sound out words and see that there are many words that are similar to each other.

Students need a variety of assessments or you will not really know if your students are learning. A lot of words have the same rime and if students are able to find onsets and rimes by themselves reading can be a lot easier for them. Understanding onsets and rimes can enable a student to read with ease and allow the student to have the confidence of knowing that they can sound out a word.

Spelling can help any student see the connection of sounds and letters. Technology is becoming a huge part of our students education career and because of this students are relying on computers to fix their misspellings. Although technology is in every aspect of our lives, we cannot rely on computers to auto correct words that we misspell. Knowing how to spell words can help anyone decode words that they may not know and in turn increase our vocabulary.

Spelling is important but also the correct sounds that goes with each letter or letter combination is important as well. For example, /oo/ has a long or short sound. The word "good" has a short /oo/ sound and the word "food" has a long /oo/ sound. The basic rules of spelling are the foundation of every literacy class because vowels are part of the basic ability to read and write. This assessment is a fun way for students to practice their vowel sounds.

When readers are following the words that they are reading with their fingers and are reading slowly, then they are either working on their fluency or lack fluency. Fluency in reading is important so that when a student is reading out loud it sounds smooth and natural. Being a fluent reading helps students really focus on the meaning of the text that they are reading rather then putting their focus on decoding the words that they are reading.

Having different types of games to go along with assessments will help students see that learning is fun. The only way to improve in fluency while reading is to keep practicing. Teacher and student reading along together may help the student because the teacher is modeling how a passage should be read. Students reading a loud helps them practice their fluency.
